Enrich products with metafields (Shopify)

This guide is specific to Shopify stores. The dialog-data metafield relies on Shopify’s metafield system. On Prestashop or custom catalogs, attach the same kind of hidden context directly in your catalog JSON (free-form description fields, custom metafield entries — see the catalog schema).

Want Dialog’s AI to know more about a specific product, without displaying that info to the customer? Use the dialog-data metafield.

This is a product metafield created in your Shopify store. Once defined, it’s available on every product.

Create the metafield

1. In Shopify admin → Settings → Custom data → Products → Metafields.
2. Click Add Definition.
3. Use any namespace (e.g. custom), any name, any description.
4. Set the key to dialog-data.
5. Select Multi-line text as the content type.

Use it

Once the definition exists, you can fill in dialog-data on any product. Use it for:

• Compatibility notes (“fits iPhone 14–15”).
• Usage context (“best for dry skin”).
• Technical specs that don’t belong on the public product page.
• Internal reminders the AI should know but customers shouldn’t see.

The AI will use this content when answering customer questions without displaying it verbatim.
